- Question: Lately, many youth’s way of thinking has become tumultuous. They have become divided and fanatic. We hear about many categorizations such as someone being an Ikhwânî, Tablîghî, Surûrî, Jâmî1 and so on. What is the truth regarding these categorizations? Is categorization entirely prohibited and does it belong to the differences of opinions?
Shaykh al-Fawzân: Categorization that exists to chase people away and spread hate and enmity among the people is not allowed.
The categorization that exists to differentiate between the one who errs and the one who does right, the one who follows the correct Manhaj (methodology) and the one who does not follow the correct Manhaj, and so that the person who has erred should return to the truth, [this categorization] is correct. The people are not the same. Some are disbelievers, others are hypocrites, some are defiant sinners and some are believers. Among the believers there are those who have a complete faith and there are those who have an incomplete faith. The people are, as said, not on one and the same level.
If the purpose is to differentiate between truth and falsehood, then it is correct (I.e. to categorize). If the purpose is to spread hate among the Muslim youth and the Muslims, then it is not allowed. It belongs to the deeds of Satan and his helpers.
