- Question: I am a youth who seeks knowledge and comes from a state that is largely characterized by the Somali al-Ittihâd that is nowadays more known as al-I’tisâm which among other things, has produced the movement Al Shabab which in turn have joined and pledged allegiance to al-Qâ’idah. Salafiyyah is very weak with us. There are Hizbiyyûn that hoodwink the people and say that there is no difference between Salafiyyûn and Hizb-ul-I’tisâm because both educate Kitâb-ut-Tawhîd by Imâm Muhammad bin ‘Abdil-Wahhâb and al-Wâsitiyyah by Shaykh-ul-Islâm [Ibn Taymiyyah]. They have sadly affected some youth among the Salafiyyûn. Some preachers and correctors content themselves with exhorting to good deeds and general matters. We see how some come from the Gulf countries and say that they are Salafiyyûn whilst they have contact with some organizations they say are Salafiyyah. How do you advise us and them?
Shaykh Muhammad al-Imâm: We advise Ahl-us-Sunnah everywhere to lay stress on differentiating with their call and their clinging to the truth. When this differentiating is taken from the messenger (sallâ Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam), it becomes very beneficial. All good exists in the guidance of the messenger (sallâ Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam).
Take al-Qâ’idah for example and people who exhort to homicide-attacks, mining and murders in the name of Jihâd and similar names that in actuality stand for a good significance, but which is implemented by people who do poorly. The callers of Ahl-us-Sunnah, students and scholars clarify that they do not call the people to murders, homicide-attacks or mining and that these deeds do not belong to their methodology and that they do not adopt them. al-Qâ’idah is best known for these things. Murders, homicide-attacks, mining, they are best known for these evident deeds. These deeds are not consistent with the Qur’ân and Sunnah. They contradict the Qur’ân and Sunnah. The Muslim scholars of today have advised this type, that is, al-Qâ’idah, and warned them against their misdeeds and which deviations and disadvantages they consist of. However, not many have accepted the advices of the scholars. Differentiation from these occurs when one clarifies the call of Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamâ’ah and that it does not agree with these when it comes to these deeds that they perform.
They (the scholars) likewise say that the call of Ahl-us-Sunnah does not exhort to parties, democracy, human laws and innovations. They exhort to the following [of the Qur'ân and Sunnah]. When Ahl-us-Sunnah possesses much knowledge and deeds in accordance with the Qur’ân and Sunnah, it becomes easy to clarify Allah’s and His messenger’s (sallâ Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) call, which in actuality is the call of Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamâ’ah, with a beneficial and sufficient clarification. If this clarification occurs, it would be enough for the people who listen and study to know that this call differs from the call of the parties, revolutionists and other than them.
When our father and Shaykh ‘Allâmah al-Wâdi’î [Muqbil] (rahimahullâh) was asked in a sitting at our father ‘Allâmah and Shaykh Rabî’ (hafidhahullâh) about why his call has spread to such an extent, he replied, inter alia, by saying:
“One reason is the differentiating.”
Differentiating has to exist in order to support the truth and not for the sake of popularity. Differentiating has to exist to support the truth. The idea is that you join the truth, stick to it and support it as good as you can and ask Allah, your Lord, for help. This differentiating is very beneficial. That is why the call of Ahl-us-Sunnah in Yemen is very clear as opposed to many Islâmic countries. The call is not clear and explicit there because one does not lay stress on differentiating. It can be due to several factors such as lack of knowledge and a strong opposition against Ahl-us-Sunnah.
